Kayak Gear

An important element to consider with you kayak gear is safety. If you are going to kayak away from the shore or have an overnight journey then you need to be equipped with the appropriate kayak gear.

A kayak rests very low in the water; so it is important that other boaters out there, especially power boaters, see you. Having a PFD with reflective tape is advisable as is having a battery-powered light attached to the bow and stem of your kayak.

To alert other boaters of your presence, carry a whistle in an easily accessible place. Select a whistle that does not use a pea, which is the little ball inside some designs of whistle. The water could cause the pea to malfunction and render the whistle useless.

If you are out there alone, far away from shore, make sure you have a paddle float with your kayak gear. A paddle float works as an inflatable pillow that slips over the blade and will help you re-enter your boat in an unassisted situation.

If you are journeying out there alone, it is always a good idea to take a spare paddle. Many designs of paddle break down into two pieces for easy storage. Having a paddle leash can prevent you from losing your paddle during an unexpected wet exit. A paddle leash will secure the paddle to your hand or deck rigging. A paddle leash is not intended for white water kayaking because of the risk of it becoming entangled in the swift water, but in a touring kayak, this is a great piece or kayak gear.
