Kayak Accessories FAQs

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO TAKE WITH ME ON MY KAYAK?
Without doubt, the most important thing to take with you out on the water is your Personal Floatation Device (PFD). It is not called a lifejacket for nothing. 90% of the people who died from drowning last year were not wearing a PFD. This statistic should be enough to make sure that you ALWAYS wear a PFD when you are out on the water. It is also important that younger children wear a lifejacket when they are near water as well as on water.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR TAKING CHILDREN KAYAKING?
Again the most important thing to remember is to equip your child with a PFD. Make sure it is a snug fit at all the adjustment points. Check by picking the child up by the shoulders of the lifejacket. If it has been properly adjusted, the child’s chin and ears won’t slip through. Don’t be tempted to tie the child to the boat for safety. In the event of danger, the child will be trapped. Instead, have them sit next to an adult who can hold them and guide them through the moving waters. Good training for children is to find a stretch of clam water without any danger below. Have the child float on their back with their feet downstream. Practice tossing them then a rope and pulling them to shore, kids will love the game and learn valuable skills on the water.

WHAT PADDLE IS THE BEST FOR KAYAKING?
It is advisable to spend as much on a paddle as you can afford. A good paddle such as ones made out of carbon fiber give you much more buoyancy which will help you brace and roll, all essential elements to overcome danger. A quality paddle will also save your energy and work through the water much easier than cheaper paddles that make constant paddling exhausting.
